Spring has finally arrived! That means it’s the perfect time to start thinking about what RV accessories you’ll need, including those for your RV awning. You’ll most likely be spending a lot of time in your RV’s patio area, so you’ll want to make sure your awning lasts for the season. After all, they provide shade and can help protect you from the elements.
Obviously one of the easiest things you can do is keep your RV awning clean. They should be hosed off periodically to remove dirt and stains. This should be done a few times per season and before storing your RV for the winter. If you feel it needs more than just rinsing, you can clean it with a dish soap solution or with approved cleaners designed for RV awnings. If you choose to use dish soap, the rule of thumb is about ¼ cup of dish soap per 5 gallons of water. When cleaning, remember to apply the soap or
awning cleaner to both sides. After applying to one side, you can roll the awning up for a few minutes to let the cleaner or soap easily be applied to both sides. Let it sit for a few minutes so the cleaner can break up the dirt, then rinse it off. If you need to scrub the awning, use a light touch so as not to damage it. Never put weight on or lean over an awning. Supplies such as a long-handled brush can help you reach across. Let the awning air dry completely afterward. Never store an awning while its wet, whether it be from cleaning or rain, as that promotes mold and mildew growth.
Besides cleaning, you’ll want to reduce the chances of awning getting damaged. The first thing to remember is not to keep it extended if no one is at the campsite or if everyone is inside the RV for the night. When you do your routine cleanings, you should also inspect for damage and wear. Listen for odd noises, look for warped or damaged supports, and check the fabric for tears. Smaller tears can sometimes be repaired. If damage to the awning fabric too much to repair, replacement fabric is available. Make sure it can extend and retract the way it’s supposed to. Support joints should be lubricated to prevent them from stiffening up or sticking.
After you’ve taken care of cleaning and maintenance, you can focus on sprucing up your RV patio area. There are a number of accessories available to update your RV patio area. Decorative lighting can set a mood and make the area more inviting. Add additional shade with awning extensions or
side shades. Create privacy and protection from the elements with a screen room that attaches to the awning. Of course, RV patio mats provide a comfortable place to sit underneath the awning.
