Keep Sanitation Simple With Portable Sewer Tanks

Among the routine responsibilities you need to perform on your RV, maintaining sanitary holding tanks is usually the least pleasant. It is a necessary task to keep your RV functioning properly, and to maintain a healthy environment. Make the process cleaner and easier by utilizing an RV portable waste tank.

Five Kinds Of Common Holding Tank Mistakes

When it comes to RV sanitation, the following are five mistakes you may be making with your holding tanks:

  • Emptying the holding tanks when they don't have much in them: You may be emptying your holding tanks prematurely. Wait until they're at least two-thirds full to use your portable RV waste tank (And when dumping the tanks, empty the black water first and then the gray water tank.)
  • Leaving valves open: Always check that the holding tank valves are closed after you're done dumping the contents into your RV’s portable waste tank. This is especially important for the black water tank, the one used for your toilet.
  • Using the wrong kind of toilet paper: You should be using toilet paper specifically made for RVs, as it will break down more easily in the holding tank.
  • Choosing the wrong chemicals: The chemicals you're using may be unnecessarily dangerous; for example, they may contain formaldehyde, instead of using a safer, enzyme-based formula. And on top of that, they may be ineffective. Maybe you've purchased something that only dispels unpleasant odors, or even kills off the more useful bacteria in the tank (the ones that help break down waste).
  • Relying on low-quality sewer hoses: You need a hose that can hold up under strain and repeated use (including being dragged along rough surfaces). The hose on your portable sewer tank needs to be long enough and come with extensions when needed. If your hose does not fit or connect properly, it will increase the chances of unpleasant and unsanitary leaks.
