There is no actual equation, but if you have a high demand for propane, you would need to go with a high pressure regulator. Although, it would not hurt anything if you use a high pressure regulator either way. It would be recommended to use a high pressure regulator if you have more than one furnace or other large appliance that needs quite a bit of propane.

The Allen wrench cap is an access cap. The adjuster screw is another black piece with a screwdriver slot. The access cap must always be replaced and fully threaded in after adjustment, because the center post is a mechanical stop for the internal relief valve mechanism.

If you are just using one tank, you may be better off using a straight two stage regulator instead of the auto changeover. If the heater is the only appliance, it would be best to use the MEGR-291L if it is mounted vertically with a hose from the tank valve to the regulator. If it is mounted horizontally, directly to the tank valve, go with the MEGR-298L or MEGR-295L(same as 298L but with brass POL inlet fitting already installed). Below is a link to our page with all three of these items.

This regulator does have mounting holes, but they are not threaded. What is recommended is a self-tapping screw, specifically a #10 x 1/2" long sheet metal screw, which will cut its own threads as it drives in.

The regulator can be mounted horizontally if needed for your application, but you will want to be sure that the vent screen is pointed downward as much as possible; moisture and condensation that may get trapped in there will need to run out.

I want to run the current tank dry before switching over. My max draw is no more than 70,00 BTU. which model 253 Marshall Excelsior should I use? Hi, Medium or Lo. I'm using 30 pound tanks See more »

You best bet is to go with the Marshall Excelsior MEGR-253L Excela-Flo 2 Stage Low Capacity Regulator It is always best to match the BTU's as close as possible so there is less variation. Since you have 70,000 BTU this would be a good match.

The MEGR-253H will work ok, but I would actually recommend the MEGR-253L. It will give you less output pressure fluctuations as flow rate varies. The MEGR-253L will still have more than enough capacity for a 30,000 BTU/hr heater. You would also need POL pigtails to connect the regulator inlets to the tanks. Those would be MER401 series. Available lengths are listed below.

No you would not be able to install a line in the bottom of the regulator. You would need adapter ME418 linked below then a hose to run from adapter to appliance also linked below in 2 different sizes.

I need to replace my regulator on my RV. It currently has a 605H. I am presuming "H" stands for High flow
I am presuming the 253H would be the replacement. Please let me know. See more »
1 year ago
The 605H number is the UL identification number for the old Marshall Gas Company. It is not a high- capacity regulator. You can substitute a standard MEGR-253 for a Marshall Gas Controls 254-00 Automatic Changeover Regulator. If you already have a MEGR-253H you can use it. It will work just as well as the MEGR-253. If the hoses are as old as the regulator you should replace them also.

Good high flow regulator

I've been happily using this model regulator for years but they do need to be replaced over time.

AN upgrade from the failure prone Fairfield

I am replacing the Fairview that came on my Lance with this. In three years I have had three Fairview failures and I will not buy another. Folks that have made the change say the Marshall Excelsior is far more reliable. I hope I can say that it is the case five years from now. RV Upgrades shipped the product very quickly.

Perfect Replacement Regulator

Given the current shortage of propane regulators, I was fortunate to find this one at RV Upgrades. It works perfectly and even has the same size and mounting hole dimensions as the old one. The price was right and I couldn't have asked for more.
