You depend on your propane tank to supply you with the utmost convenience and enjoyment of living in an RV or a motorhome. It has a plethora of responsibilities in your rig, such as allowing you to cook and providing cooling in your refrigerator and freezer. But it is also responsible for one of the most vital actions: heating your water.

As important as your propane tank is to you, as are you to it. That is why you should take close care of your propane tank and not let it simply run excessively without a close eye from you. One example of this is knowing when you are required to turn it off by law and doing so, such as when you go through most tunnels.

Another step you should take in order to take the utmost care of your propane tank and RV is to know your tank inside and out. Therefore, you should be aware of the various LP fittings it requires and what they do.

All fittings for your RV have female and male ends, to start off with. You can easily tell the difference between these by observing the fitting closely. Each fitting has a different look in comparison to others, but in general, if something sticks out, it’s male. If it’s concave-like, it’s female.

However, there are seven different types of LP fittings that you should be aware of and where to typically find them:

1. Type 1 or ACME (on DOT tanks)
2. Flare (supply hose to camper’s gas piping system)
3. NPT or National Pipe Thread (on or to be inserted into regulators)
4. POL (original and common type)
5. Quick-Disconnect (for accessories)
6. Disposable Cylinder Port (for some grills or fire pits)
7. Inverted Flare (between pigtail hoses and two-stage regulators)

Depending on what you need your propane tank or connection to do, you’ll need a specific fitting to get the job done. Be sure to give a perusal through all of our LP fittings and give us a call or text us at 866-332-7881 with any questions you have so that we can find the right fittings for you and your RV.
